Gone Fishing

I thought I'd post a few photos we took recently for a VO brochure. We shot them at a nearby pond, so we got in a little fishing. I was reminded of these when I took my 13-year old son fishing on the upper Potomac yesterday. I'm not much of a fisherman, but he loves it, so I cast a few times and occasionally catch a bluegill or a little bass. Do any of our readers use a bike to go fishing?

That last photo is of my newly built up Campeur. Note the knob grips with guidennet levers, as was common on the old French campeurs. There's also a different style of mudflap that we might make, a reproduction of an old French shape.

Where did you get the leather-wrapped thermos in that last shop?

There's no budget in my future for the campeur; I might be able to swing the thermos. But I don't see it in the store.

Is that one of the long-rumored VO campeur-style racks on the front of that Campeur?

Great way to show use of your unique style of bike. Plus the photos are super... I'm getting really interested in transferring my love of cycling into this relaxed approach of cyclling.. and your blog has been a big help in doing so...

I started bicycling in the 70's and formed a bike club with Arni Nashbar in Youngstown Ohio that is still going today... its always been a passion for me and its fun to discover your product, photos, and style..

Now I need to compile a list of all the things I want...

Mike, We used to sell that thermos, but the company stopped making them.

John-Paul, That's a prototype rack. The production versions they are welding up right now look even better.

I occasionally take my bike to ponds in central Phoenix to go fishing (not too many great options). I have trouble packing my rod onto the bike, though. I'm curious how you pack your rod.

Hi,
Is that a custom crankcase cover?
Re the thermos Thermos are making a thermos king 16 oz flask which fits a bidon holder like the vo mk11 no tab
only snag is the coating will scratch up a bit
hope you caught some ! (fish that is)

cheers Rob

I ride to the banks of nearby lakes and creeks all the time to fish. I have a dinky collapsible and a decent two-piece rod that I bungee to my rear rack. Fishing hole rides are among my most adventurous. :)

The brake levers seem to be mounted at an odd angle...or is it me?

Josef, Regarding carrying a rod, I just let a two-piece rod stick out of a pannier or back pack. A one piece rod is best strapped to to the top tube. A four-piece travel rod would be ideal, but I don't have one.

Rob, That's the VO chaincase: http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/accessories/chainguards-stay-protectors-kickstands/vo-porteur-style-chaincase.html

Bike-And-Fish outings are a lot of fun, esp. if you live in a bike-and-fish friendly place like Eugene, Oregon. Here's a brief account from a couple of years ago.

The rod in the burgundy-colored tube is a two piece Flylite (6 ft4 weight fly rod).

The shop I weekend at in Nova Scotia had some guys come in looking for bikes with racks that they can take down trails to get to the fishing spots. I asked them about it and they said quite a few serious anglers are now forgoing ATVs in favor of bikes so they can save on gas, be quieter and less polluting in the woods. Not needing a pickup truck was another reason. These guys were pretty redneckish... The type I usually hear making fun of or looking down on people who ride 'pedal boikes' (accent attempted). Good to see the mighty bike is making it's mark all over. Made my day.

They told me they used PVC tubes with end plugs for holding the rods, and just took the reels off.

The French/650b thing hasn't hit here.

Any idea when the Campeur will be available? It looks wonderful.
