I thought I'd post a couple of photos of the final VO handlebar bag design. It's a little taller than the last prototype. The production version will be of treated canvas; this one is plain canvas. Otherwise, this is it. The projected price is around $90.
Also we received a few items that have been out of stock for some time, including:
- Nitto M-12 racks
- Honjo 650b hammered fenders
- Nitto model-T water bottle cages
There are also a few new items in stock:
- A larger selection of Kool Stop pads including pads to fit old centerpull brakes
- Tange Techno Glide headsets
- Tange Falcon headsets

Two questions about this batch of M-12s, because I know these things can vary:
ReplyDelete1) Do they have the light mount brazeon on just one leg, or both?
2) Are they polished, or that duller silver finish?

The bag is roughly 28 x 20 x 15cm. It mounts just like any classic style bar bag, rack, decaleur, or to the bar.
ReplyDeleteThe M12 racks have 6mm eyelets on both legs and are almost as shiny as VO racks.
Is VO now carrying Kool-Stop rather than Yokozuna salmon pads?

ReplyDeleteActually, it'd be cool if someone produced a modified MAFAC brake-shoe eyebolt which allowed one to fit modern threaded V-brake shoes, IMHO.

ReplyDeleteJust like the GB 2086, I wonder about those uncovered side pockets in the rain, especially with something in them. Looks to be a place for water to collect and seep inside? What's your experience.
The bag will come in one size for now. One of the reasons for the low price is we are making them in relatively large quantities, economy of scale and all that. But that also means that a dozen variations of the same bag is not possible.
ReplyDeleteLike the Berthoud and TA and Ostrich bags, this bag is based on earlier French designs. There is not much that is new in any of them since the design was virtually perfected 40 years ago.
We are working on a rack-top bag, a large saddle bag, and small panniers, but they are still in the design stage so I have no idea when they will be available.
As for brake pads, we are developing our own line of brake pads that we hope will stop as well as any, never ever squeal, and not be as abrasive on rims as most current pads. So the pads we now stock are a sort of place holder that we can easily source.
Nice - especially for the price. I would have preferred hook and loop closures (as on the main flap) for the small back pockets. Makes them much easier to get into while riding. Maybe on future runs?
ReplyDeleteHow large of a saddle bag are you working on? I'd like to see one large enough to carry my size 12 shoes and laptop for commuting. My Carradice Overlander does the job but is a pretty ugly blue color. A bag that large is also ideal for touring. I can easily put a down sleeping bag, stove and tarp tent in my bag. Combine that with a front bag and you're all set for hostel/inn touring or overnight camping trips.

Chris, if you're planning a largish transverse saddle bag, can I suggest that it angles back in shape towards the seat post (ie, the shape contour goes slightly under the bottom of the saddle). The main problem with the Carradice style on modern bikes is that when the loop is attached to the seatpost it pulls the bag forward and shifts the natural drop of the bag. It also angles the flap and the opening so it's pointing more downward than straight back.
