E-Bay and Flashlights

Once again we've accumulated a formidable pile of samples, seconds, prototypes, and parts used on showroom and demo bikes. There are even some old French components that I bought for research purposes. So Kyle has been assigned the unenviable task of sorting through everything and listing them on E-Bay. It'll take at least a few weeks to get everything listed. You can find all these treasures under seller name "veloorange".

With the days getting shorter I've been thinking about bringing back the VO front rack-mounted flashlight. The model we sold in the past is no longer available, so we'll look for a new suitable light.

  1. An unsolicited suggestion -- it might be good to include "Velo Orange" in the title of your auctions. I, for one, have a search set up for "Velo Orange" and "VO" because I am interested in the range and type of products that you sell, but don't think I can successfully predict all the brand names that might be included in that class of goods.

  2. Place your bets now on how many of these items will sell at or above retail.

My money is on the rims, one of the saddles, and one of the bags

  3. my bet is that the TA bag will go above its retail price.

  4. Although the whole retro thing is awesome, I would like to humbly suggest that you look for some LED lights to use. They have so many advantages over regular lights that it would be a no-brainer. Maybe you could develop a light holder that would work with Cateye lights.

  5. Chris, I would love for you guys to do the flashlight mounts again. There are plenty of LED high powered flashlights out there that I'd cry to integrate into my bike. Please please please!

  8. It would be really cool to get an led flashlight designed to look like the retro lights you used to sell. There is no point in flashlights which are non-led lights these days.

  9. By the way, you should also sell the sew up leather kit as well for the flashlight.

  10. How about a classic shape tail light but with LED bright power saving internals? I need one for my constructer tandem

  11. Forgive the digression, but what is also really needed in the lighting realm is a smaller, better looking, fender mounted tail light (as an alternative to the Spanninga).

  12. You could update a classic rear light with one of these LED bulbs - they even have a standlight function. Fronts are also available. The shop I linked to doesn't take credit cards and I haven't found any others selling these bulbs, but they can be found on German ebay.

  13. I would like an LED taillight that looks better than Spanninga, preferably one that I can recharge. A nice looking fender-mounted rear reflector would be great, too.

On fender mounted taillights: I tried gluing onto the back of the fender a very lightweight rubber-encased strip of LEDs that use a coin-sized camera battery. This unit is sold at bike shops with rubber straps on it to strap to seat stays. I cut the straps off.

It's very bright and also waterproof, but the switch is a bit fiddly. I glued it on with silicon seal. I've had to remove it once to change the battery. It lasted 3 months or so at 5 use-hours a week. It looks better than the Spanninga unit, which I have tried.

  14. Please bring back the flashlight! It would be wonderful to have one that looks exactly as pictured, but with LED.

And a better-looking LED tail light would also be appreciated. Everything out there right now is unattractive, to say the least.

  15. you know you guys already have some of the ingredients for a number of bike light solutions. check out what i fabricated up, in one case i used the VO water bottle handle bar bracket and in another case the thread less stem spacer made to hold a bell.

  16. Check out the thread on the classic looking Basta taillight (last three messages):

I run an screw in LED red bulb in my Basta tail light with no standlight. Most of my riding is on trails, so it is not a safety worry. Running a rear LED in that unit throws off a good amount of light.

I would really love to get that led standlight.

Regarding flashlights, that Czech unit you sold is really cool. Glass lens (huge!) with focusing bezel. They don't make em like that anymore, and I doubt you will find them. (unless you find something in India).

  17. I think the right flashlight is available and it looks very similar to smaller light w/leather wrap you show. It is the Taskforce #225285 "60x brighter" 3 watt LED 2 "C" battery available at Lowes for $25! I jury rigged it on my handlebar, but would love to mount it (maybe 2) lower, as on a rack. If you check into it, the key is "60x brighter" on the package.

  18. I would love to see a reproduction of the classic flashlight with modern LED lights

  19. second the comment about the Task Force flashlight, it's a great light and would be hard to improve upon, except for maybe providing a piece of cardboard from a TP roll to keep the batteries from rattling (seriously)

I can't tell if that's what's in the pic just with a leather wrap or no... but it if it's not that exact light it's darn close.

Anyway, it's certainly bright enough to use as a bike headlight. Here's a product suggestion, how about a collimator that turns the Task Force beam pattern into something approximating an E-code headlight? I'd buy one!
