Glenn posted some photos of his newly built Velo Orange 650b Cyclotouriste.
He writes:
The idea was to have an all-purpose bike and the pictures show 3 configurations: with handlebar bag, for randonneuring; with basket, for small errands; and with trailer, for big errands. The lowrider mounts on the fork make a light touring configuration possible, too, although I haven't tried that yet. I use the 3 shown every week. Switching from one to another is easy: the BicycleR Evolution trailer attaches with a quick-release compressor fitting and rubber straps attach the basket to studs (bolts, really) on the front rack.Good job Glenn! Check out the lights and the Sugino PX cranks. The rest of the photos are here.
Very nice!
ReplyDeleteI love the quick change system for the basket mounting. What's going on with left side rear dropout?
That is the trailer hitch mount. Neat concept.

That looks really nice. How well does the Cyclone handle that wide range double setup?
ReplyDeleteOf course. I really like how it seems to really facilitate changes from mode to another. The usual problem with a versatile build is the hassle switching all the various associated hardware. Well thought out machine.
ReplyDeleteIan,
ReplyDeleteThe only trouble I've had with the Cyclone is chain-rub on the top of the derailer cage when in the big ring and the big cog. This was cured by moving the derailer up a little bit. It still shifts well. I asked on the iBOB list and was told that other derailers would have even less clearance.
I like the wide-range double. Most rides, I stay in the big ring. If I'm pulling a big load or really tired, I'll shift to the little ring.
oh yeah, beauty.
ReplyDeletei must say that my bleriot is just a favorite, love the whole concept, which seems much alike here. the reason for my post is that i just replaced my brake levers with non aero NOS dia compes with the nice quick releases, and found an immediate 20% improvement in braking power and modulation,(tektros) due, i believe simply to the more direct cable line. long live the graceful non aero cabling system! long live velo orange!!
Sugino PX and XT, that's my kind of bike. It's beautiful. I'll have to try out the basket mount. I've tried a number of "quick release" tricks but none as simple and as elegant as that.
ReplyDeleteI'm curious to see a closer picture of how the schmidt light is mounted on the fender. I just got one of the E6s myself and I've been hemming and hawing over how to do it right. The additional fender brace is a nice touch
ReplyDeleteI'm curious as to the specifics of your basket quick attach system.
ReplyDeleteI haven't taken another picture, but the light-mounting bracket is simple. It's just a strip of stainless steel bent into a U. My friend with a drill press drilled holes through the sides and bottom of the U. The holes on the sides have to line up and I couldn't do that freehand. With the extra fender stay, the mount is solid but it's too early to say that it's durable.
ReplyDeleteThe VO rack has four eyelets, intended for mounting lights. For the basket mount, I attached bolts to those eyelets, with nylon spacers on the outside. The result is four studs; the basket is held down by two rubber straps, where each strap attaches to two studs.
