A Few Notes, UPDATED

I'll e-mail, I mean call, I mean write a letter today and order a bunch of Amish baskets. Neil has kindly offered to help arrange for the Hershbergers to have boxes made and to help them arrange shipping. So if you'd like an Amish basket, or a full set, let me know.

Honjo has finished our order of custom fenders and, depending on how quickly our import agent can get them on a ship, they should be here in a couple or a few weeks.

Ostrich says they can make a special run of handlebar bags for us in another color. Any suggestions on the color? And should they be heavy nylon or cotton duck?

Also, we still seem not to receive the occasional e-mail. So if I don't respond, please try again.

The photo on the right is of my our son playing in the ocean in Spain. Those of us in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states need a reminder of warm weather today. On the left are a couple of shots taken in our front yard this morning.

UPDATE:

We have a few pair of hammered 35mm fenders for 700c and 45mm fenders for 26" wheels in stock.

I've started a list of folks who want baskets and I'll e-mail you as soon as they come in.

We'll have some prototype racks from a company in Taiwan on the specials page later today. Frankly, they did not meet our standards and we won't stock them. But they are a good deal for beater bikes. One is a stainless steel camping style rear rack. The other is like a Nitto M-12, but black, heavier, and not as well finished.

  1. My vote would be for cotton duck (waxed?) for the handlebar bag.

Color selection: anything that looks spiffy againsts a black frame--maybe a nice subdued grey or khaki color.

  2. Another vote for cotton. I would really enjoy a big handlebar bag that resembled my black Carradice seat bag. I'm not as concerned with matching the bag exactly, just a mostly black bag.

Can Ostrich put in map case plastic without the grid while they're at it?

  3. Those frozen limbs in your front yard look like good candidates for Amish basket materials.

I didn't think it sleeted up North. Heard is was all dry fluffy snow all the time.

  4. Khaki colored cotton.

Quit whining. It's -6 below zero as I write this. Wind chill -17.

It could be worse; I could have wood heat, and a horse and buggy. Jeez, tranportion for the Amish has to be a real bitch in the winter.

  5. You're right Neil, I shouldn't complain. Now go back to to ice fishing with the rest of the grumpy old guys ;<)

  6. I think a dark gray cotton bag would look good against the silver, orange, black, and blue colors of the Rando frame. Maybe something like the Jitensha bag color?

  7. Hello Chris,

Just ordered one of your wonderful lights and 2 caps. Please send me a pair of BLACK and GREEN color caps Sir ( NO whites, unless a significantly superior rubber quality).

    Thank You Kindy,

  8. a brown cotton to match the VO saddle bag...please, please, please.

  9. Khaki to match your VO saddle bag would be nice. Maybe they could add a
rack strap on the back and lose the silly map grid while they're at it.
And make it open TOWARD the rider!

  10. The lake I live on has a few icehouses scattered in groups around the lake. Ice fishing is an example of how men would live if there weren't women to "guide" them. There is a little fishing and a lot of swearing and spitting, and alcohol involved. The fishing shacks tend to look like oversized outhouses, painted the pinky brown color you get when you mix all the extra paint from the old cans in the basement. One my little joys is looking at the seasonal village of 50 or 60 of the shacks clustered on the ice in front of million dollar starter mansions.

I particularly enjoy Grumpy Old Men as it was filmed in the area where we had cabin when I was a child. Jack Lemon even looks like a smaller version of my father, from whom I learned the art of standing on the ice for hours staring down into a dark hole. If it weren't for my father I probably have been forced to learn the skill in a gym in a Community Ed class.

  11. I second Michael's suggestion of the Jitensha grey. But would it be possible to do a run without leather? And how about slightly smaller dimensions?

  12. matching the current velo orange bags would seem like the best idea.

but if they can't lose the grid don't even bother. just last month i ordered both ostrich bags and the grid on the handlebar bag is more annoying that i could have imagined. if i cant remove it with some kind of solvent, i plan to replace it.

i'm also thinking about waxing them. any suggestions on what type of wax or the process?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Right now Ostrich has only offered to do a run in another color. But they also said they would consider doing a bag to our design in the future. So I'm not going to press them to make a lot of changes, but I will ask for a non-grid plastic and a loop for the bag support.

I do not have an Ostrich bag.

I use Filson's wax on my cotton duck bag with great success. Shouldn't be much different with the Ostrich bag.

Filson been making it for their legendary cotton duck coats for many years now.

  15. My vote for this run:
Dark grey or dark chocolate brown cotton.
My vote for future custom run:
smaller size (less deep front to back), no grid on map case, no leather trim or reinforcements and dark grey or dark cocolate brown cotton.

  16. Ah! yes, Filson. I've been wearing their Tin Cloth Packer Hats for many years. Rainwater rolls off the Filson better than off my Carradice Pendle. Heard a rumor that Ralph Lauren bought Filson - hope it's not true.

  17. How about plain old cotton duck, the orangey-brown like a good pair of Dickies or Carharrts.

  18. A holding company headed by a former Ralph Lauren VP purchased Filson about a year ago. The purpose was "to leverage the Filson Brand". They have taken some of the Filson items overseas and introduced "Lodge Wear". I noticed the new CEO was replaced a couple of months ago. I don't know if that was good or bad.

  20. Ralph Lauren and Filson! Oh brother.

I better pick up some items while they are still what they were and keep them in the back closet.

Let's hope Giant isn't looking to buy Velo Orange!?!

  21. How about orange?!

  22. anon-
I, too, thought a deep orange cotton duck would be nice - or poassibly a deep blood red.

I see! I didn't understand the no leather requests til now. Personally I like MORE leather trim, but a vegan bag is a good idea, too.

  26. No takers on the Amish baskets yet? I will definitely order a pair of the panniers.

  27. For those of us who prefer to remain anonymous, it would really help if we put our intials at the bottom. It's really confusing with three or four anonymous posters on the same thread.

  28. I think it’s great that you’re going to pursue other colors! I’ve wanted to order an Ostrich front bag for awhile now, but I just couldn’t get with the color. I vote for the cotton and I’d like to see something in a neutral color; not that I don’t like orange or green, but I think you have to work with a color that will look good with a multitude of color schemes.

  29. But if we put our initials, we might not be as open in our communications to show our raw truthful emotions. Plus we don't look stupid when we say something bad. It almost seems like one of those rare win-win situations.

  32. Speaking of beater bike fenders, Planet X has a new black plastic 42mm wide fender, which fits just right on old ten speed forks, and exactly 1cm larger than 1-1/4" wide tire.

Without Western or Japanese sponsorship in China or Tawain, odds are against decent quality material, and even that is no guarantee. And if it looks too good to be true...

But thanks for continually trying different items. Your items are always the best price for the highest quality standards available.

  33. Sorry to stray pretty much straight off the off topic but there seems to be an unusually disproportionate number of vegans on this blog. Or is it just me and one multi-posting anon?
