As promised, here's Scott Mathauser 40mm 'RUST' brake pads for old Weinmann centerpulls. Address is in picture. No other info was sent. Hope this saves someones life in the rain. It took me 3 weeks to get these, but Kool stops RUST salmon brakes are unobtainable. I like these thick solid rust pads, so will try these first, since only ones available, lol. About $20/4 brake pads.
Oh yeah Chris, Scott Mathauser is looking for distributers, especially since none on east US nor any in US as well publically exposed on web with internet store like you have. Fyi, since seen allot of Weinmann centerpulls on your/your customers bikes.
These seem to be improved (noted by new packaging) since the sheet metal retainer holding pads goes all the way around, versus on 3 sides only. Other than preventing the pads from unlikely sliding out in reverse, it seems like it would provide a more secure braking force with pads completely enveloped and pinched in secured Sheet Metal. I can't tell if Kool Stops are enveloped on 4 sides of sheet metal like this since covered in coated layer of rust material. Likewise, I don't understand what is below the layer of coated rust material on Kool Stops if the base pad is Rust material or just the coated material itself - ???
Looks like I'll be cleaning black streaks off my wheels next week and adding the brake pads in picture. I can't wait, because needed something to help me stop better at my 240+ lbs. Best dollar for dollar brake upgrade I can think of for my old beater.
they are maxi car tandem hubs with drum brakes. super good hubs. far nicer looking than say, phil hubs with an araki drum brake. drum brake pads basically never wear out cause they are so big, so replacement parts isnt a huge issue. they would be great hubs for a custom touing bike as well. need to find some wingnuts...
Neil, they are just nice silver repros of old campy headsets, probally better cause their japanese and NJS approved. Its hard to find fairly low stack height logoless silver threaded headsets today.
also: in case you guys didnt know, drum brakes are typically used in conjunction with a rim brake. they are set up as drag brakes, to curb speed on long decents,so your rims dont over heat and blow your tubes up. I had it happen this summer... heavier rims like the rigidas arnt as prone to that...
I'm thinking of stocking the Tange Levin 1500 NJS headset, the alloy version. I think they are very nice and about half the cost of the Hatta. Any comments on those?
Sure, the Hatta headsets are nice - but way too expensive. I can order a steel Tange headset from QBP for $18 that will last a lifetime. Yeah, It's like 50 grams heavier... big deal. Chris, the alloy Tange sounds nice but if it costs half of the $135 Hatta, what do we get that the Stronglight doesn't do for $35? Oh yeah, folks, please use Tiny URL when posting links - all these URL's are being broken in the comment windows.
The only real advantage of the Tange is that it looks like an old Campy, which a lot of people like. Also, because it uses ball bearing it has a little less friction than a Stronglight. The Stronlight's roller bearing last longer, but add a little drag when you turn the bars, not really a big deal. The same can be said of the Hatta. The cost of the Tange NJS would be $45-$50. A9 prices just went up, so when we re-order they will be around $40, pretty reasonable either way.
If the alloy Tange is $45 and the Stronglight is now $40 then I would personally opt for the Tange. I didn't know the prices would be so close. Thanks Chris.
Johnson, I have an extra set of rear wingnuts you can have. I mean they're not Maxi-Car originals but they've not been used, maybe they'd fit, heck if I know. They're the same threading as Huret rear axle wingnuts if that helps. Speak up and they're yours.

These are english threading I believe. Which is good cause there isnt a source I know of that has Sachs freewheels or any other french freewheels availible. Chris: maybe you could bring in some of those new IRD freewheels.

ReplyDeletesuper good headset as well. i left my steel one on a commuter bike that i left in the rain for about a year, no rust, no grease screwed up by water.
